There is not a large open source community developing bioinformatics code compared with the BioPerl and BioJava communities. However, there are a number of individuals and companies developing applications and writing about it. Some examples are
The section C# discusses the basics of C# as an application programming language and the section Developing Web Applications with ASP.NET discusses ASP.NET as a web development platform. The ASP.NET framework is probably better suited for commercial software development and than for open source and academic projects. This is mainly due to the commercial business model of ASP.NET and protection for intellectual capital within compiled source code in C#. However, we will likely see a mixture of commercial products and open source projects with ASP.NET in future.
